2011 Section Conference
For the second year in a row and the eleventh out of thirteen years O-Shot-Caw Lodge came home with the biggest trophy in Section S-4: the coveted Best All Around Lodge trophy!
As O-Shot-Caw Lodge members filed into Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation the energy and excitement that we caused in the camp could not be handled. O-Shot-Caw was back for round two and S-4 could tell right away.
From the start O-Shot- Caw was in full force with contingent t-shirts and hats. Our Lodge brought the house down at the Friday night show with the infamous horns that O-Shot-Caw premiered with last year.
O-Shot-Caw Lodge was the loudest Lodge in attendance for the second year running. Our cheers could be heard throughout the camp during the weekend. Yet again the South Floridian spirit lent a hand to O-Shot-Caw’s victory of the Section Lodge Spirit Award!
In AIA activities O-Shot-Caw’s Ceremonies Team consisting of James Kerr, William McKinley, Aaron Kudja, and Kevin Innes won “Best in Section” for Pre-Ordeal. James Kerr, John Semander, Aaron Kudja, and Kevin Innes competed in the Brotherhood Ceremony and won “Best in Section” . Jake Cairo competed in the Novice Northern Traditional Dance and received 1st place. Drum Team led by Chris Alveraz received 2nd place and O-Shot-Caw’s Group Dance Team led by Colby Kudja received 3rd place.
Our Publications Chairman, Will McKinley competed in the Publications Competition and The Patchwork was honored with the title “Best in Section Publication”. Our Lodge’s Golf Teams re-ceived 1st place in “Best Score”, “Pure Lodge”, and “Best Youth Team”. Our Lodge Inductions also won 1st place. There were also outstanding performances from our Website Design by, our Lodge Historical display.
After countless trophies and honors, there was another big win during the Section S-4 Officer elections. One of our own Arrowmen, Frank Gamez, was elected to serve as the 2011-2012 Section S-4 Chief. Another one of our Arrowmen, Alan Randall, was elected to serve as the 2011-2012 Section S-4 Secretary. Then for the first time ever in O-Shot-Caw history, an adult from our Lodge was appointed to be a Section Associate Advisor, Glenn Gomez. (See separate articles on our Brothers on Page 5 and 6) Hope to see you at Section Conference 2012 on the weekend of April 20-22, 2012 at Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation, Quincy, FL.
Chiefly Speaking - April 2011
The past few months have gone by so quickly. O-Shot-Caw Lodge put on so much since the last release of the patchwork. We had a beautiful Winter Ordeal weekend at Camp Everglades. We put on a massive Indian Display at both Lincoln-Marti Camporee and Scoutmaster's Camporee. O-Shot-Caw Lodge had an amazing Banquet and selected very suitable Leaders for recipients of the Founder's Award and Vigil Honor. Our eyes are on the horizon and we will continue forward.
The Winter Ordeal was held January 7-9, 2011, at Camp Everglades. It was a great weekend with gorgeous weather, great food, awesome fellowship, and cheerful service. Our largest project was the construction of a much needed composting toilet. We inducted nearly 100 new members and 27 Brothers sealed their ties with Brotherhood membership. Congratulations to all new Brothers and Brotherhood members!
Last Year, our Lodge made a significant push to provide more presence at council events. This year we kept the standard set by providing a real presence at Lincoln-Marti Camporee and Scoutmaster's Camporee. Lincoln-Marti was a complete success. Many people learned about Native American Culture and more about our Order. The display at last years Scoutmaster's Camporee set the standard of size, but this year, we added even more. The display was so busy that we had to push the closing time back an hour, and even when we did close, Scouts still didn't want to leave. It was nothing short of phenomenal.
Recently, the O-Shot-Caw Lodge Banquet was held on March 4-6 at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, FL. It was a fantastic weekend! Congratulations to all members whom sealed their ties in Brotherhood on Friday night. Saturday was full of training seminars and Chapter competitions. I would like to thank John Semander for planning excellent training seminars, and I would like to thank all instructors. I would also like to thank Jake Cutler for providing terrific games for the competitions. I am also very happy to congratulate our two Founders Award recipients R.J. Hickman and Bill Gilliland. These two individuals truly represent the ideal of scouting and our Order. I would also like to congratulate our newest Brothers who were selected for the Vigil Honor: Colby Kudja, Wilson Valle, Will McKinley, Jake Cutler, Kristoffer Senzig, Kevin Innes, Jesus “Gene” Olive, and Charly Yost. These are real Leaders in service to our Lodge. Congratulations!
One of the most anticipated events of the year is right around the corner, the 2011 Section Conference at Tanah-Keeta Scout Reservation on April 8-10, 2011. Register online or at the Scout Office. This is an opportunity for O-Shot-Caw to show our Section what we have accomplished this year. We will remind Section S4 who O-Shot-Caw is!
I look forward to seeing you all at the 2011 Section Conference!

Chiefly Speaking - September 2010
I hope everyone is doing well now that the Summer has wound down and has started into an amazing Autumn. O-Shot-Caw Lodge has kicked off the fall just perfectly and is standing strong, moving ever forward, and setting the pace for cheerful service.
Back in August, O-Shot-Caw Lodge leaders gathered together for our annual Lodge Leadership Development on August 21, 2010. The event was held at Shula's Hotel in Miami Lakes. The leaders arrived early in the morning and were trained throughout most of the day. The food was excellent, the staff professional, and the training was very worthwhile to all who attended.
After LLD, the Lodge helped South Florida Council host a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony on the ninth anniversary of the tragic attacks. The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer was said by Lee Thornton Davis, a member of the Lodge Executive Committee. We then paused for a moment of silence at 8:46 am, the moment 9 years ago when the first plane hit the first twin tower. The rest of the morning was spent singing patriotic songs and thanking the men and women of the fire and police departments for their courage and protection.
On September 24 - 26, 2010, the Lodge gathered for the Fall Ordeal. The Ordeal was held at the Heron Preserve in Markham Park. Paldani definitely cooked some of the best food I have ever had at an Ordeal. It was very good and we were fed well. Hnu-Ra-Con, brought in some real creativity with their slip-n-slide style of dodge ball, I had a ton of fun playing that one. Also, Elgixin held an excellent Interfaith Worship. Overall, the Lodge gave a ton of cheerful service and had a blast.
Well, as great as the fall has been so far, O-Shot-Caw will ascend to new heights as we venture farther into the year. Coming ever so closely is our annual Haunted Forest. The Haunted Forest will be held on October 22-24th, 2010. I encourage all brothers to attend. Why? Because it is so much fun! I have yet to attend a Haunted Forest and not have the time of my life. And the sole purpose of the event is to raise money for the Joseph Aaron Abbot Campership Fund, a fund created to help scouts go to summer camp. The next event that is also rapidly approaching is Section Seminars. It will be held on November 5-7th, 2010 at Sandhill Scout Reservation in Brooksville, Florida. The event is a huge gathering of Order of the Arrow brothers from across Florida. The gathering is for fellowship with others who share an interest in Service, American Indian Activities, Leadership, or Ceremonies.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Haunted Forest and the Section Seminars!

Fellow Brothers,
The O-Shot-Caw Lodge year is just about to be kicked off! Isn't that exciting?
Next week, the Lodge Executive Committee will meet at the Tom Tatham Scout Center in Miami Lakes. Among the topics to be discussed are LLD, Fall Ordeal, and Haunted Forest.
Then that weekend, the Lodge Executive Committee will come together for a day of training at the Lodge Leadership Development, or LLD.
The next big O-Shot-Caw event will be Fall Ordeal. The Fall Ordeal flyer is out on the website. You can download it and register for Fall ordeal.
I hope you all are as excited as I am for a great Lodge year. It is an honor serving as your Chief.
Yours in Brotherhood,

Chiefly Speaking - June 2010
Since the last edition of the Patchwork, the O-Shot-Caw Lodge has been busy doing many great things. The Lodge has begun a new age at Section Conference, selected new leadership at Summer Ordeal, and provided countless hours of cheerful service at Four-Corps 2010. These last few months have been jam-packed with fun, brotherhood, service, celebration, work, and fellowship.
O-Shot-Caw had an incredible attendance at the 2010 Section S4 Conference. Seminole Lodge did a fantastic job hosting the conference, which was held at Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation near Lake Wales, FL. This is where we made our presence known as we filled the camp with our cheers and spirit. We put all our effort into the competitions. When Sunday morning rolled around O-Shot-Caw was awarded the Best All Around Lodge trophy along with Inductions and the Spirit Award. Such a finish is only fit for a great lodge. After the awards, Frank Gamez ran for Section Secretary and won. Congratulations Frank!
The Summer Ordeal was held at Markham Park at the beginning of June. It was HOT. But O-Shot-Caw continued to give cheerful service by removing non-indigenous species of plants around the lake. Congratulations to all new brothers whom were inducted at this ordeal, I'm proud of how you worked diligently to serve cheerfully. On Sunday, the Lodge chose five youth leaders to serve as the 2010-2011 Lodge Officers. They are myself as Lodge Chief, John Semander as First Vice, Jake Cutler as Second Vice, Aaron Kudja as Secretary, and Evan Burr as Treasurer.
A week after Summer Ordeal was the groundbreaking project: FourCorps 2010. This event was held over a week in the Ocala National Forest. The project was modeled after the 2008 conservation project ArrowCorps5. O-Shot-Caw Lodge proudly brought the largest contingent. I really enjoyed this event, I saw plenty of old friends and made many new ones, and I'm sure the rest of our lodge did the same.
The future brings some awesome events. The first is the LEC on August 19th, then Lodge Leadership Development, or LLD. The LLD will be held and Shula's Steak 2 in Miami Lakes on August 21st, where those seeking leadership in O-Shot-Caw Lodge can sharpen their leadership skills.
I am so proud to serve the O-Shot-Caw Lodge as your lodge chief. My brothers, O-Shot-Caw has returned as the Best All-Around Lodge. A new era is upon us. Now is the time to cheerfully serve our fellows more than ever. I believe that we are the pace-setters in this journey. O-Shot-Caw is back and better than ever!
Yours in Brotherhood,
Jonathon Yost
